Following the Viral "Rules"

Every marketer’s dream is for his or her message to spread like wildfire. To get your message recognized among the thousands of advertisements that people see each day is becoming more and more difficult. The key to standing out in a crowd is to differentiate yourself and the message you are sending.

Viral is the way to go if you are looking for a low cost and massive take over but understanding what viral really is, is key!

Author and entrepreneur, Seth Godin, explains it best in his Blog: What makes an idea viral?

“For an idea to spread, it needs to be sent and received.

No one "sends" an idea unless:
a. they understand it
b. they want it to spread
c. they believe that spreading it will enhance their power (reputation, income, friendships) or their peace of mind
d. the effort necessary to send the idea is less than the benefits

No one "gets" an idea unless:
a. the first impression demands further investigation
b. they already understand the foundation ideas necessary to get the new idea
c. they trust or respect the sender enough to invest the time

This explains why online ideas spread so fast but why they're often shallow…Notice that ideas never spread because they are important to the originator.”

To have a viral campaign be effective and have your marketing dreams come true, you have to either let the message spread itself or plan accordingly and follow “the rules.”

This is very true, some viral marketing takes off by itself when there wasn't even plans for it to be popular, like the Dance Evolution in your prior post. But then there are carfully thought out viral marketing efforts that are attempted, some work out some dont. But this is a great tool to guide someone who is planning a viral takeover!!
