Marketing Among the Mayhem
With the popularity of MySpace, and its user base increasing to nearly 80 million over the past year, there has been an overabundance of marketing messages congesting the website.
This networking site was created based on the idea of unknown bands having a chance to increase their awareness with hardly any cost. Now with the clutter of advertisements how is an unknown band, comic or entertainer supposed to emerge?
One comedy group decided to create a challenge based on the very successful comic Dane Cook who has over 1 million friends on MySpace. Dane Cook is a man who grew from the internet into a comic phenomenon. Now the Miami Comics are attempting to start their own phenomenon based on a viral marketing game they created: “Catch Dane Cook.”
The goal is simple: to reach the number of MySpace friends that Dane Cook has. This is a great attempt and is bound to reach much recognition since it is centered on an already established comedian. Since consumers feel that they are part of the mission they are more inclined to “play along.”
The game was announced last week and has already gained them 55 new friends totaling 442. This is clearly far away from their goal of 1 million but the Miami Comics hope people will be rooting for the underdog and become their friend, in turn creating a positive buzz for the group.
Users are optimistic so far: Jared posted: Best of luck in your quest to catch Dane Cook! I'm spreading the word. :-)
Keep track of the success or get the banner and play along-

That is a good idea, soon people will run out of these ideas and we will be forced to start marketing the "normal" ways again.
