Ten Viral Marketing Steps to Follow

What are some main points to focus on when preparing a viral marketing plan? Bill Sweetman, a Vice President of Internet Strategy, reported on One Degree: Internet Marketing Insiders about his top 10
his top 10 best viral marketing practices.

1. High Concept is the top priority. The key is stimulation and this takes something special.

2. Make the headline concise to ensure a good viral marketing concept

3. Focus on simplicity. If it is too confusing or detailed, people will not be easily engaged. The key is to have something easy to pass along.

4. Humor engages the consumers. If it is something that sparks laughter and excitement, many more would be willing to share it with others.

5. Sex is always enticing, however, not always appropriate for many marketing messages.

6. If possible, utilize a big name. This will pull people in easier due to recognition and they will pay attention to your message quicker.

7. If possible and timely, use something already being talked about in the media. This will also help with familiarity of the message and gain attention from consumers quickly.

8. The message should be good enough to be passed along without asking, do not rely on begging the consumers to pass the message along.

9. Do not make it look “corporate.” A home-made approach will help consumers connect more easily and be viewed as more real.

10. Mysterious content is good to keep people guessing which will help aid in the buzz being passed around. However, you must reveal the mystery eventually or the consumers will feel as though they were taken advantage of and become irritated.

Number one: High Concept is the top priority. The key is stimulation and this takes something special.

This is the hardest part, this is the part that decides if the plan will fail or take-off. Can you create this or does it have to create itself? If created, is it really viral or only if born in and of itself?

Good points to focus on though! Thanks.

Don't forget empathy and benefit. The reason that humor works in viral campaigns is that people can relate to the subject matter in a very real, emotional way. Showing that you empathize with your audience is essential to having your message passed along. People also only pass along ideas because it brings them benefit -- even if that benefit is just sharing a laugh with a co-worker.

Great blog.
