Viral Platforms Growing
Video search sites are a home base for viral marketing. The growth of these platforms is proof that viral efforts are worth the exertion and help connect to various consumers. Hitwise Data has reported that the market share of internet visits to video search sites has increased 164% from February ’06 to May ’06.
It is not a surprise that the most trafficked video site is YouTube. This site alone accounts for 43 percent of the category’s visits during the third week in May. YouTube’s market share for that three month period increased 160 percent. This was well above MySpace Videos.

YouTube is also a social networking site that allows the users to control the content and information they share. MySpace, the top social networking site, actually accounted for 20 percent of YouTube’s traffic for February and March of ’06. MySpace soon after recognized the success of video sharing and added a video sharing section to MySpace at the end of March ’06.
The recorded average session time for users spending on the video sites demonstrates a high level of engagement between the site’s content and its visitors.

LeeAnn Prescott, senior research analyst at Hitwise stated, "The rapid growth of online video sites in the past six months demonstrates a major shift in online behavior…The Internet is quickly moving from static web pages to an environment rich with interaction and user generated multimedia content."
The rate of growth and engagement is a positive path for the life of viral marketing. If this platform is utilized correctly for viral outlets, success in reaching a wide range of consumers and connecting with tem will be sure to follow.
